While Congress gets ready to increase the minimum wage nation-wide, employers doing business in San Francisco must remember that the minimum wage within this city is higher than both the State of California and Federal minimums. Under San Francisco's Proposition L, the rate went up to $9.14 per hour on January 1, 2007. According to the Chronicle, Marriott Corp. thought their food servers were exempt because of a collective bargaining agreement and tips. Wrong. The mistake just cost the company $1.35 million plus attorneys fees.
